Fallen Monarch This large one of a kind piece is carved from a cedar root it depicts the struggle for survival in nature. The main symbolic element is the head of a fallen moose which was carved out of a large shape in the root that reminded me of a moose. The surrounding cattail stalks and leaves depicting a swamp environment are carved in deep relief around the entire piece. The moose is encircled by a pack of six timber wolves also carved in deep relief into the surrounding wood and highlighted with acrylic paint using an airbrush. Overlooking this dramatic scene is the head of a loon, emerging from the swamp a flushing pheasant a circling hawk and at the base is a turtle all residents of the cattail swamp and powerful symbols in Native American culture. The Pheasant, Loon and hawk have custom glass eyes inserted and are subtly highlighted using an airbrush with acrylic iridescent paints. The entire piece is then finished with hand rubbed clear high gloss polyurethane to bring out the flow of the grain and protect the piece from UV damage. The massive base was created from a solid linden log and shaped to follow the contours of the piece and finished with hand rubbed polyurethane.
